Hortto Kaalo

Finnish Kaale public band, from 1969

Finnish Kaale

Style: Finnish Kaale song

The band that put Kaale song on a Finnish political stage. FMQ: 1960s, fighting for better social conditions, not restaurant music. Named so the Kaale page holds more than Grönfors.

Finnish Music Quarterly: in the 1960s Romani music became more visible in Finland through Hortto Kaalo, which also fought for better social conditions. Formed 1969 by Feija Åkerlund, Marko Putkonen, Taisto Lundberg and Heikki Nyman; Nyman left shortly after (that founding list is the public encyclopaedia line; FMQ confirms the decade and the political stage). They sang in Finnish and in Romani. Taisto Lundberg is the same man later known as the iskelmä singer Taisto Tammi — that public career sits on the Kaale page, not as a second family.

This is in-group song stepping onto a majority stage. A different job from the café primás.
