Finnish Kaale song

Kaaleenlaulut · Kaale songs

Finland · Sweden

In-group oral song of the Finnish Kaale. Gender rules. Not restaurant music. About 10,000 in Finland, about 3,000 Finnish Roma in Sweden.

Teaching: a child sits where adults sing. Women’s educational songs versus men’s trade and strength songs. Hilja Grönfors: singing men’s songs in front of older men can insult. She later performs both because secrecy now risks loss.

Anette Åkerlund was the first Roma folk-music student at the Sibelius Academy (FMQ 2016). SKS holds about 450 hours from 1967.

Change after the war: sedentarisation, guitar from the 1960s, Hortto Kaalo on a political stage from 1969 (own family page), tango and iskelmä public careers (Taisto Tammi, Markus Allan, Anneli Sari), Christian ensembles Romanos and Freidiba Boodos from the 1970s.

Named: Hilja Grönfors (Master Folk Singer Kaustinen 2005; Suomi Award 2014; Latšo Džinta). Åberg 2015; Åberg and Blomster 2006: an older modal layer related to rekilaulu “Romanised,” not Indian survival.
