Kalyi Jag

Black Fire

Hungarian Roma — Nagyecsed / Budapest, from 1978

Style: Vlax song & Central European families

Kalyi Jag. End of August 1978. Szatmár Roma youth commuting between Nagyecsed and Budapest. The name is from a line of Bari Károly. Inward song, beside the restaurant primás families.

Kultura.hu, 5 September 2008, thirty years: the ensemble formed at the end of August 1978, from Szatmár Roma youth commuting between Nagyecsed and Budapest. They took the name from a poem by Bari Károly.

Varga Gusztáv, speaking there for the ensemble: the founding was a “küldetés” — a sending. They meant Roma song and dance to stand in public culture. In 1979 the ensemble received the title Népművészet Ifjú Mestere.

This page files that public group. It does not invent a family tree around the name.

Rombase (Kovalcsik): first Hungaroton record 1987, Gypsy Folk Songs from Hungary. Young Masters of Folk Art 1979; the disc came later. Other public groups of this inward song sit on their own pages: Ternipe, Ando Drom, Rományi Rota, Kanizsa Csillagai. Not the café book.

A Kalyi Jag tudatosan törekedett arra, hogy a roma népzene és néptánc a közkultúrába kerülhessen … az együttes már 1979-ben elnyerte A Népművészet Ifjú Mestere címet.

Kalyi Jag meant Roma folk music and dance to reach public culture … in 1979 the ensemble already received the title Young Master of Folk Art.
