Family G3
Limberger
Piotto — Vivi — Tcha; WASO
Manouche / Sinti — Belgium (and the Dutch border)
Style: Gypsy jazz / Jazz manouche
Belgian Manouche violin and guitar family. Grandfather Piotto, father Vivi (Waso, with Fapy Lafertin), Tcha Limberger. Tcha’s own site is the source for that line.
Tcha Limberger’s site: born into a Belgian family of Manouche musicians. Grandfather Piotto Limberger, violinist and bandleader. Father Vivi Limberger, singer and guitarist, recorded and toured with Fapy Lafertin and the band Waso. Tcha studied Magyar nóta in Budapest with primás Horvát Béla, a Sinti player of the Hungarian restaurant book. The two families stay distinct.
The Fiddle Channel, 2020, Hungarian Gypsy Music?: Tcha speaks at the end. Auto-caption wrote “Charlinberger.” This is his family page. He told the film Magyar nóta is high-level music making; it may be artificial folk and still be incredible; most Romani people play the music of the country they live in. The family stays Manouche. The book stays Hungarian.
Jimmy Grant interview (https://youtu.be/CSGObB0WIqw): Tcha on Magyar nóta vs village music, on Western “Hungarian” menus, on Django kept separate, on Transylvania multi-repertoire work. Style history thickened from that interview. Brács teaching tape he points to: Hankó / Boross — see the Boross family (https://youtu.be/8Mw2Ay4FBSE).
DjangoBooks 2005 adds chairs Tcha’s site does not name (Storro, Jan, Sas van Gent). Those are listed under Later. Whether Fapy is uncle or cousin also is listed under Later. Ferret of Paris is a different family. Living dates: Gypsy Jazz Hub.
On 9 December 2020 Tcha uploaded a clean transfer of Hankó Ferenc (brács) and Boross Lajos (violin). A home tape from a Dutch tour in the 1960s, Limberger believes. He writes that hearing it made him go to Budapest to learn the style. The Boross family holds that recording. This family stays Manouche.
